Rules & FAQ

  • What is Mutagenesis?
Mutagenesis is a collaborative creature-building platform. You can create new creatures, mutate existing ones, publish your creations, and browse the growing bestiary built by the community. You can also contribute to the ever-growing pool of components used in creation and mutation.
  • How does creature generation work?
Each creature is assembled from modular components such as body parts, senses, behaviors, and attacks. The generator selects traits at random from a shared community pool, but allows users to re-roll and lock parts as needed.
  • What does “mutating” a creature mean?
When you fork or "mutate" an existing creature, you create a new version based on the original. Your creature becomes part of that lineage, and anyone can follow the ancestry to see how designs branch and drift over time.
  • What are components?
Components are reusable parts — bodies, limbs, behaviors, attacks, etc. Users can publish new components, which are added to the global community pool. As more components are contributed, the generator’s possibilities expand.
  • What are encounter packs?
Encounter packs let you bundle multiple creatures into a themed group. You can adjust the quantity of each creature and use packs as tools for tabletop encounters or worldbuilding.
  • Can I save creatures I like?
Absolutely! You can favorite any creature, component, or encounter pack by clicking the heart icon. Your favorites appear on your user profile page for easy access.
  • What are the rules for publishing content?
Keep submissions respectful and broadly usable by others. Avoid harmful or explicit content, offensive language, and copyrighted text or images you did not create. Components and creatures should contribute meaningfully to the shared pool.
  • How does moderation work?
Moderation is currently handled through user reports on each creature or component page. Reports are manually reviewed. Users can include details to help moderation, and inappropriate submissions may be removed.
  • Is the site finished?
Not yet! Mutagenesis is still an active work in progress. Expect improvements, new features, and a visual overhaul as the project grows.

Mutagenesis is created by Austin Kleinecke, 2025 for CSU Chico CSCI-565.
